Internally vs Externally Threaded Jewelry Explained

Internally vs Externally Threaded Jewelry Explained

When choosing body jewelry, one small detail can make a big difference in safety, comfort and method of piercing: the threading. The two primary types you’ll encounter are internally threaded and externally threaded jewelry. But what do these terms mean, and why should you care? Let's break it down together.

Internally Threaded Jewelry

Definition: In internally threaded jewelry, the thread (or screw) is on the end of the removable piece (like a ball or gem), while the shaft of the jewelry itself has a hollow, threaded interior.

How it works: The decorative end screws into the post.

Most high-quality, implant-grade titanium jewelry (like ASTM F136) used by professional piercers is internally threaded or threadless. This type of thread offers a smooth insertion and is very secure, with minimal risk of the ball or gem unscrewing and getting lost. No exposed threads also means a smooth surface passes through the piercing, reducing trauma, therefore providing better chances at healing properly.

Externally Threaded Jewelry

Definition: In externally threaded jewelry, the shaft of the jewelry (barbell / labret post) has the thread on the outside, and the removable end has a matching hole to screw onto it.

How it works: The post is inserted through the piercing, and then the end screws onto the protruding thread.

This type of thread is frequently used in lower-cost jewelry, often made of cheaper materials, like steel and silver. The exposed threads can scrape or irritate the inside of the piercing channel upon insertion, so it's not ideal for new piercings. As many professional piercers still have not switched from external threads to internal, we find it crucial to provide externally threaded jewelry made of implant-grade materials like titanium to minimise risk. Why Threading Matters

The threading of the jewelry you choose as a piercer is a crucial matter, as it determines the way you will perform piercings and the tools which you will need to use (we'll go over this in another post!). Whether you are a piercer investing in body jewelry for your clients or a piercing addict shopping for yourself, choosing internally threaded or threadless options is the safest and most comfortable route.
